Every October, the National Fire Protection Association observes Fire Prevention Week, which falls on October 4-10 in 2026. The observance began over a century ago to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, and it remains a helpful reminder to check the basics of home fire safety before colder weather sends more people back to their stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters.
Common Causes of Home Fires
Cooking equipment is consistently one of the leading causes of home fires, followed by heating equipment, electrical issues, and candles. Many of these fires are preventable with a few routine habits, such as staying in the kitchen while cooking, keeping space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, and having electrical wiring inspected if it’s outdated or overloaded.
Fire Safety Steps Worth Repeating Every Year
Fire Prevention Week is a good prompt to walk through a short checklist at home:
- Test smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and common area, and replace batteries or units as needed.
- Review your household’s escape plan and make sure everyone, including children, knows two ways out of every room.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it.
- Clear dryer vents and chimneys of built-up lint or creosote.
- Avoid overloading outlets or extension cords, especially with space heaters or holiday lighting.
These are small steps, but they can make a meaningful difference if a fire does start.
What Homeowners Insurance Typically Covers
A standard homeowners insurance policy is generally designed to help with the financial side of a fire loss, though coverage details vary by policy and insurer. In many cases, homeowners insurance may help with:
- Dwelling coverage, which can help pay to repair or rebuild the structure of your home.
- Personal property coverage, which may help replace furniture, clothing, and other belongings damaged in a fire.
- Additional living expenses, which can help cover temporary housing, such as a hotel stay, if your home is uninhabitable during repairs.
- Other structures coverage, which may extend to detached garages, sheds, or fences damaged in a fire.
Because coverage amounts, deductibles, and exclusions differ from policy to policy, it’s worth taking a closer look at your specific declarations page rather than assuming what is or isn’t included.
Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value
Another detail worth understanding is how your policy calculates a payout for damaged belongings or structures. Some policies use replacement cost, which is generally based on what it would cost to replace an item or rebuild a structure at today’s prices. Others use actual cash value, which typically factors in depreciation, meaning older items may be valued lower than what a new equivalent would cost. Knowing which method applies to your policy can help set realistic expectations if you ever need to file a claim.
Don’t Forget About Updates to Your Home
If you’ve completed a renovation, added a home office, or purchased higher-value items like electronics, jewelry, or musical instruments since your policy was written, your current coverage may not reflect the full value of what’s inside your home. Some belongings, such as fine art or collectibles, may also have limits on standard policies and could benefit from additional scheduled coverage.
Take a Few Minutes to Review Your Policy
Fire Prevention Week is a convenient annual checkpoint, not just for testing smoke alarms, but for reviewing whether your homeowners insurance still reflects the value of your home and belongings. If you’ve made renovations, purchased valuable items, or haven’t looked at your policy in a while, now is a good time to check in.
